These things make people happy:

Having friends
Being healthy
Not living in poverty
Being married

Money doesn’t make you happy. (Neither do kids according to many studies!)

I would add religious faith, as attested by this WedMD article: http://www.webmd.com/content/article/78/95776.htm
As for kids, I was happy before I had kids and am happy now that I have four. They bring me great joy and more of a sense of purpose in life.
