Behind the scenes, "failed" Linux desktop product introductions are probably big earners as bargaining chips. But the threat needs to be credible, so companies have to keep throwing money, staff, and documentation at desktop Linux. Even if not one customer actually wanted desktop Linux, we'd still see one "year of desktop Linux" after another.
