I agree there are several tools that can help you manage your email more effectively.
However, if you are trying to create an open source community, you’d be better off with an open source mail tool.

Thank you for this post. It's important also to have a good online presence. If you're going to be e-mail heavy, make sure you have a program like outlook, and a plugin like Outlook Track-It http://www.outlooktrackit.com, which is a followup email reminder. It's difficult to keep in touch and build community without staying on top of emails. This add-on for Outlook helped my business a lot.
